Camões and Magnasco explore themes related to the human condition, raising universal questions that resonate with us even today. Camões, with his worldview and adventurous spirit, offers a glimpse of the globalized 16th-century world. Magnasco addresses society and its complexities, using art as a means of critique and reflection on the customs of the time. Two remarkable works serve as the starting point for our upcoming initiatives

Workshop Inspired by Literary Journeys at HSM&L
As part of the exhibition celebrating the birth of Luís de Camões in New York City, a workshop designed by Ana Cordeiro, the winner of the 2024 Governor's Medal for Arts and Culture, will be held. The activity consists of a practical exercise inspired by two historical book types: the Turkish map fold and the Vade mecum.
Sometimes called the exploding book, a Turkish map fold is a sculptural book format that reveals its content unexpectedly. This stand-alone can be a fun addition to your journal or notebook. The Latin term Vade mecum refers to a manual that is always at hand for consultation. On Saturday, October 26th (4 pm – 6 pm), come to HSM&L to learn various folding methods and expand your creative skills!

Camões, a cultural icon
In this video, curator Isabel Almeida presents an exhibition honouring the legacy of Luís de Camões, a pivotal figure in Portuguese literature whose work profoundly impacted 16th-century European intellectual landscape. The exhibition focuses on the epic poem The Lusiads, which celebrates Portugal's maritime endeavours and reflects a rich humanist culture. The 16th century was a period of significant transformation, during which a new awareness of the world's breadth and diversity revolutionized cartography.
In close collaboration with the Gaudium Magnum Foundation – Maria and João Cortez de Lobão, this showcase explores the Renaissance era, a time marked by a burgeoning enthusiasm for modernity. Don't miss the chance to visit it before November 10th at the Hispanic Society Museum and Library in New York City.
